Deacon Sunday – March 1

Dear Members and Friends:

This year Escalon Presbyterian Church is recognizing Sunday, March 1^st as DEACON SUNDAY.  The purpose of this day is to recognize the work of the Deacons, and to receive and dedicate your gifts to the Board of Deacons for their annual work.

We are proud of the work of the Escalon Presbyterian Deacons.  Our mission is one of “sympathy and service” to our congregation and community.  On behalf of the church, we provide regular support to Escalon’s established community assistance programs which include C.A.R.E. and the Ministerial Association.  We also support Calvin Crest, Haven of Peace and are currently involved in ministry outreach with the Salvation Army. Last Christmas the Deacons initiated a “giving tree” for a local family of eight with an additional treat of Mr. & Mrs. Claus delivering the gifts. And, as circumstances arise, the Deacon Fund is used to help families and individuals with a financial crisis.

Within our congregation Deacons seek to provide expressions of love and concern to our members.  Deacons serve lunch for funerals, arrange for meals to be taken to those who are ill or recovering from surgery, acknowledge our graduates, purchase and deliver Christmas gifts to shut-ins, mail appropriate cards of joy or support, and make in-home, and rest home visitations.

Deacons also assist each month in the worship and work of the church.  We prepare the communion table and elements on Communion Sunday, decorate the sanctuary each week, and provide a “Deacon of the Month” who readies the church for worship each Sunday.  We also arrange for the lay leaders and greeters needed for every service.
