FALL SERMON SERIES

This Fall we will spend six weeks on a little known book of the Old Testament entitled “Habakkuk.” It is one of what is commonly known the “Minor Prophets.” The Minor Prophets are a collection of twelve books at the end of the Old Testament, however, they’re location is primarily due to the short length of each book. The prophets actually lived at various points throughout the history of the Old Testament and if the collection of books of the Old Testament were organized chronologically they would be interspersed throughout.

This series will cover what it means to live by faith in the midst of troubled times. Please take time to read through the book – a few times straight through would be best.

September 12 – The Collision of Faith and Life (Habakkuk 1:1-5)

September 19 – Why Does God Do Nothing? (Habakkuk 1:1-17)

September 26 – Waiting and Living by Faith (Habakkuk 2:1-4)

October 3 – The Culture of Pride (Habakkuk 2:5-20)

October 10 – Generosity in Scarcity (Habakkuk 3:17-19)

October 17 – Stewardship Sunday (tentative)

October 24 – Rejoicing in Tribulation (Habakkuk 3:1-19)

* Thanks to Tim Keller for his pastoral leadership in providing wonderful Sermon Series outlines – www.redeemer.com

In the U.S., we have many opportunities to attend a wide variety of Christian conferences that are focused on equipping us to live out our faith in the world. First Pres Berkeley is home to the Global Church Conference (GCC), a conference born out of the desire to faithfully consider issues of faith and justice in a global context. The GCC is unique in that all the speakers are Christian brothers and sisters from places in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East. We need to hear our fellow disciples from the Majority World speak into our lives so that we can be encouraged and challenged with new perspectives. We are one body in Christ. What do these brothers and sisters believe Christians in the United States need to hear and understand in order to more faithfully serve God? This conference is an extraordinary opportunity for critical reflection, meaningful conversation, and global friendship.
